I. The Apology of Socrates: Philosophy Defended

36. Philosophy is fallible

a. What two options does Socrates mention regarding what happens to us after death? Which one seems to fit best with what the Bible teaches? Is our soul (self) conscious after we die? (Mention Bible verses such as: Matthew 10:28; Luke 16:19-31; Acts 7:59; Phil. 1:23; and Rev. 6:9.)

b. Socrates believes that, in the afterlife, the just will be rewarded and the evildoers will be punished. However, he doesn’t offer any proof. Why not? What sort of proof does Jesus offer (hint: read Matthew 27:45-54), and why should we believe him?

c. How can St. Paul’s two-step maxim “test everything; hold fast to what is good” (1 Thess. 5:21) help you sort out truth from falsehood?
