I. The Apology of Socrates: Philosophy Defended

33. Philosophy is happy

a. Socrates says that there are two kinds of people: those who “seem to be happy” and those who are happy. What does he mean? Is he right?

b. Kreeft says that “finding truth for its own sake makes us happy, for that is what we are made for, that is what satisfies our distinctively human desire.” Is this the same as saying that God alone makes us happy? Why or why not? Don’t forget to discuss John 14:6.

c. How is it that Socrates, who says he is happy, makes so many Athenians angry? Why isn’t his happiness more “contagious”?
