I. The Apology of Socrates: Philosophy Defended

30. Philosophy is messianic

a. In what way is Socrates “claiming to be something like the messiah of his people”? How was Jesus? (Note: the Hebrew word Messiah is the same as the Greek word Christ, so “Jesus Christ” is also “Jesus Messiah”.)

b. Why is it important that both Socrates and Jesus are claiming to teach “universal truth for all humanity and all cultures”? What if Socrates had limited his message to the Greeks, and Jesus had limited his to the Jews?

c. Kreeft says that the absence of either Socrates or Jesus from history would “leave more absences, greater changes, than be be imagined by the best science fiction writers in the world.” Is he right? Defend your answer.
