I. The Apology of Socrates: Philosophy Defended

27. Philosophy is pneumatic

a. Socrates wants all philosophers to seek to experience the “inspiration” of the Spirit when doing philosophy. Explain what he means.

b. Socrates says “something divine and spiritual comes to me” when he philosophizes. Does it seem that Socrates is “groping” for God, to use St. Paul’s word in Acts 17:27? Or is God seeking him out (or speaking to him)? Please give me your theory.

c. Do you think Socrates, if he had been alive during or after the time of Jesus, would have become a Christian? Why or why not?
