I. The Apology of Socrates: Philosophy Defended

24. Philosophy is embarrassing

a. Socrates rebukes the Athenians for not seeking virtue, which is more important than riches. How does this relate to Jesus’ admonition to “store up treasures in Heaven” (Matthew 7:20)? Is virtue a treasure?

b. Socrates says he was commanded by God to put any less-than-virtuous Athenians “to shame.” Explain what he means. Do you agree with this method?

c. In the case of the Athenians, do you think they killed Socrates because he embarrassed them? Why or why not?

d. Kreeft seems to equate the conscience with “the Socrates within us.” Is this justified? Can we ever kill our conscience? Could then Athenians ever kill Socrates? Include your reflections on Romans 2:14-16 and 1 John 3:19-20.
