I. The Apology of Socrates: Philosophy Defended

23. Philosophy is “conformist”

a. How can Socrates be a conformist and a nonconformist at the same time? Can we learn any lessons from this?

b. Why does Socrates reject the possibility of being acquitted in exchange for no longer doing philosophy? Would you take such a deal if you were in Socrates’ shoes? Why or why not?

c. Kreeft says that religious believers are the real “radicals” in society. What does he mean? Are you convinced that he’s right?

d. List and discuss the three possible standards of living, according to Kreeft, from which we all must choose. Are there any other choices?

e. Socrates says that wisdom judges us because it is independent of us (that is, we didn’t create it). Read Proverbs chapter 8: how is wisdom understood by the writer? Discuss how this relates to what Socrates says.
