I. The Apology of Socrates: Philosophy Defended

22. Philosophy is therapeutic

a. Would (or does) Socrates make a good therapist? Why or why not?

b. Socrates says that we fear death because we think we are wise when we are not. Is this the real reason we fear death? Defend your answer.

c. Socrates says that we can’t know what happens after death, but can only have faith in what it will be like. How does this square with Hebrews 11:1: “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen”?

d. Socrates wants us to love the unknown (e.g., what happens after death), rather than fear it. Is this possible -- or a goal we should set for ourselves? Why or why not?
