I. The Apology of Socrates: Philosophy Defended

20. Philosophy is simplistic

a. Socrates says, “You are wrong, my friend, if you think a man with a spark of decency in him ought to calculate life or death...” Should Christians not be concerned about whether we live or die? Use at least two verses from the Bible to support your answer. (Hint: use http://bible.gospelcom.net to look up verses.)

b. Socrates believes that the only question that a person should ask himself “is whether he does right or wrong, whether it is what a good man does or a bad man does.” What does he mean? Is he teaching “salvation” by human works? Defend your answer.

c. G.K. Chesteron says that life is not complicated for a man of principles. Does that mean that a complicated life is a sign of a lack of virtue? Can life be complicated in different ways?

d. Kreeft refers to “a double reaction to the single-mindedness of Socrates,” that is, we either think he’s naive and unsophisticated, or we think he a “better man” than we are. What is your take on Socrates? Defend your answer.
