I. The Apology of Socrates: Philosophy Defended

14. Philosophy is a divine calling

a. Socrates did not believe in the gods of the state because he was a philosopher. Does that mean philosophers don’t need to believe in God?

b. What does Kreeft mean when he calls philosophy a “divine calling”? Cite examples from Plato’s Apology.

c. Kreeft says that “a little piety is respectable and safe.” Is a person more religious when he believes in one God or in many gods?

d. Read Acts 17:22-34. What do you think St. Paul meant when he called the Athenians “very religious” (v. 22)? Did he mean they believed in the same God he did?
